About the Team:

Our Product Development group focuses on delivering customer-centric innovations that are available only at PetSmart. This allows us to create products and solutions that our pet parents are asking for that they can’t find anywhere else. This team partners with Merchandising, Brand Management, Product Design & Integrity, and Global Sourcing to bring the product from vision to reality.

About the Job:

This position creates, edits and proofs copy for PetSmart’s Proprietary Brands packaging. This role includes creative writing to establish or emulate a brand voice for each new product line that helps differentiate one brand from another while clearly communicating good, better, best tier brands. This work requires a creative and strategic thinker who can write succinct, engaging copy while adhering to regulatory packaging requirements. Candidate will work collaboratively and cross-functionally with different departments including Buyers, Product Development, Product Integrity, Packaging Design, Marketing and Legal to ensure project objectives are met.


  • Develops copy for a variety of Proprietary Brand Packaging for pet food, treats, hardgoods, specialty products and litter.
  • Creates brand voice and style guides for all new, refreshed or redesigned brands. 
  • Ensures that copy supports business objectives and strategy from a Creative standpoint; represents Copy team in weekly Creative reviews
  • Coordinates with Product Developers and Project Managers to obtain product data, specifications and dielines.
  • Reviews packaging to ensure the legal and regulatory standards provided by our cross-functional partners are consistently applied across applicable products.
  • Proofreads copy to ensure accuracy and communication objectives are met. 
  • Creates, organizes and archives electronic copy files. 
  • Manages editorial workflow for themselves. 


  • 3-4 years copywriting experience preferably related to advertising, marketing or packaging.
  • Bachelor’s degree in English, journalism, advertising or other related field.
  • Package design knowledge and understanding of proprietary brand communication preferred.
  • Knowledge of pets and pet products highly desirable.
  • Knowledge of product or packaging FDA regulations highly desirable.
  • Flexible writing style that can adapt to the needs of our internal business partners and brands.
  • Must be highly detail oriented, a self-motivated team player with the ability to manage multiple high-volume projects and deadlines in a fast-paced retail environment.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
  • Experience with workflow management system (Workfront experience a plus).

This position does not have budget management responsibility.


Applies some advanced skills to the position within assigned functional area.  May adapt procedures, processes, and techniques to meet the more complex requirements of the position.  Duties and tasks are frequently nonroutine and are varied and may be somewhat complex.  Resolves most questions and problems and refers some complex issues to higher levels.  Works under minimal supervision.  May assist in orienting and training lower level employees.  Usually reports to Lead/Supervisor or above.


The ideal candidate must be able to work in a fast-paced retail environment on multiple projects with changing deadlines and priorities. The ability to gather information from and communication with cross-functional partners to make clarity to project objectives and requirements is essential. This position requires the individual to be self-motivated, detail-driven and able to make decisions as needed to keep projects on track.


  • Demonstrated proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint. 
  • Basic proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite. 
  • Experience with workflow management system (Workfront experience a plus).
