Job Responsibilities

DISTRICT ACADEMY TRAINER (This role supports the area of Ottawa, ON and the Atlantic Provinces and will require 75% travel)


The District Academy Trainer will provide grooming technical expertise to the district (market) and oversee all salon technical training. Specifically, this full-time position is responsible for:Teaching the Academy curriculum to student stylists
Overseeing / Completing technical assessments for Academy trainees, both pre- and post-Academy, technical approval of externally hired stylists and on-going technical assessments on quality
Evaluation of staffing needs (productivity gates, location, timing) for proper planning of Academy
Driving performance and assessment of quality and safety standards within the district / market
This job requires travel among a specified group of store locations and periodic Corporate, Regional, and District meetings.


Teaching the Academy Curriculum – Estimated 6-8 academies per year; 6-8 months
Trains and directs grooming trainees to groom dogs to breed standards and to Pet Parent specification while teaching and reinforcing pet and associate safety.
Demonstrates and teaches service quality standards to develop well-trained stylists able to build relationships with PPs and assess pet needs.
Addresses complaints and resolves problems related to the Academy students’ work.
Follows Academy Curriculum as it is written; provides insight on improvements to curriculum.

Technical Assessments

Partners with Salon Managers on proper training of bathers for academy and interviews/assesses candidate readiness before attending Academy to ensure knowledge of base skills.
Follows up with Salon Manager to ensure ongoing quality education of academy students in Field Practice and evaluates student performance post Academy ensuring students are meeting quality and productivity expectations.
Performs periodic quality assessments of stylists in the market.

Academy Planning

Plans Academy appropriately to ensure proper student/instructor ratio, necessary supplies are available, and that the academy class has enough dogs every day for hands on practice.
Evaluates productivity and staffing need in the district to determine location and timing of Academy.
Performance and Assessment of Quality and Safety Standards
Travels within the District to serve as the District technical expert: providing technical support to stylists, monitoring safety of pets in the salons and ensuring adherence to P&P’s.
Provides continuous education and training within the District on technical aspects of grooming.
Collaborates with District Managers, Field Leaders, Store Managers and Salon Managers on quality or safety opportunities within the district.
Supports District Managers, Field Leaders, Store Managers and Salon Managers with operational insights as they relate to quality, safety and productivity.


At least four year related experience grooming with superior results in a salon with a preference of at least two years in a PetSmart salon and/or teaching PetSmart Academies.
Experience managing people and driving team performance.
Education on various learning styles.
Strong track record with regards to pet safety.
Ability to read and interpret documents such as basic reports, safety rules, and procedure manuals.
Writes routine reports and correspondence; familiarity with Microsoft Office products and basic technology.
Speaks effectively before groups of Pet Parents and/or associates.
Additional grooming certifications a plus.


Able to demonstrate and communicate advanced PetStyling skills and groom to breed standards
Able to demonstrate and communicate knowledge of salon policies & procedures.


While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to stoop, kneel, or crouch. The employee is occasionally required to walk and sit. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include depth perception.
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to wet and/or humid conditions. The employee is frequently exposed to moving mechanical parts, fumes, or airborne particles, and toxic or caustic chemicals. The employee is occasionally exposed to extreme heat and risk of electrical shock. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.

This role requires frequent travel within a district or specified market and overnight travel.
